Johan Piek
Counselling)
I am a Clinical Psychologist working with adults (over the age of 21-years) experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns, life transitions, and psychological challenges. My work is grounded in developing a deep understanding of each person’s inner world and supporting them to make sense of experiences that may feel overwhelming, confusing, or difficult to articulate.
Originally from Cape Town, I qualified in 2007. I moved abroad in 2016 to travel and focus on personal growth before settling New Zealand Aotearoa in 2019. Since then, I have worked across a range of clinical and senior leadership roles within a public agency and now work in full-time private practice.
I aim to offer a therapeutic space that is calm, respectful, and non-judgmental, where people feel seen and understood. My approach balances warmth and empathy with structure and clarity, supporting clients to reflect, gain insight, and develop practical ways forward that enhance wellbeing and day-to-day functioning.
Areas of Clinical Focus
I work with adults presenting with:
– Anxiety and mood difficulties
– Adjustment to life stressors, transitions, or health conditions
– Grief and loss
– Behaviour change and habit formation
– Identity, values, and personal growth
– Work-related stress and professional functioning
I have extensive experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and regularly support members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Neurodiversity-Informed Therapy and ADHD
Alongside my broader clinical work, I have a strong interest in neurodiversity- informed practice, particularly working with adults with ADHD and late-diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder. Rather than seeing this as a separate specialty, I use it as a lens to better understand emotional regulation, attention, sensory processing, burnout, identity, and patterns of coping.
I offer ADHD assessments for adults, as well as post-diagnostic support and ongoing therapeutic or coaching work. I also work collaboratively with other diagnostic providers when appropriate.
I additionally provide coaching and mentoring for neurodiverse professionals and leaders, supporting sustainable performance, self-understanding, and strengths-based development.
Outside the Therapy Room
Outside of work I enjoy meditation, cooking, music, films, time in nature, and quiet, restorative routines that help me maintain balance and wellbeing.
